![]() By Erik Rodriguez and Francisco Guzman Staff Writers This season was full of tragedies and disappointments for the Hubbard Boys Soccer team. It all began on a Friday afternoon –an intense game between Hubbard and Curie. It was a loss for Hubbard with the score being 5-2. That situation was made worse by the loss of head coach Franco Ocampo. It was hurtful for the team to see their coach leave his position. Technically, it was the end of the season for the varsity and junior varsity soccer teams, until luckily coach Ned and coach George were appointed as co-coaches for the varsity and JV teams. When asked, what was the biggest challenge faced this season? Coach George’s response was, “Coaching the varsity at the end of the season which is very tough to do because it’s too late to rectify mistakes or improve.” When asked who he thought stepped up this season, coach George responded, “From the freshman team, Juan Morales, Div.706. He made a big impression so much so that I moved him up with varsity, and he did wonderful in his first game. From varsity, I cannot say because I was not their coach all season, but junior Gerardo Gutierrez, Div. 508, always helps us in every game.” The switch was peculiar, but it raised the team’s spirit to continue the season positively. It wasn’t until Hubbard’s game against Mather High School where the team was hit with more bad news. Varsity captain, Erik Rodriguez, Div. 405, was kicked off the team due to academic reasons along with many key varsity players. They were all an important part of the team and their removal caused a great impact. The season unfortunately ended early for the soccer team with a 1-0 loss against Juarez in state playoffs. It was a close game with a late goal scored within the last 10 minutes. It was a tough season for the team, especially for the seniors since it was their last year. Through all of the tragedies and changes, the guys always stood together and they never stopped pushing each other to be better every day. They ended the season with a lot of heart and pride. Most importantly, they ended the season as a strong unit following with the pleasing announcement of head coach Ocampo’s return of coaching both Boys and Girls Soccer teams for many years to come.

![]() By Luis Aguayo Staff Writer Confidence. Not everyone has confidence before a game, but a team that has confidence stays undefeated. Hubbard has had tons of support for their sports team. In previous years, the sports teams at Hubbard went undefeated and the main reason was because of Hubbard’s confidence in their sports team. What about the coaches? Do the coaches have confidence in what they say? In my interview with the Softball assistant coach, Coach O’Hara, he told the Cavalier, “This year’s softball team is really spectacular because I have too much confidence.” The coaches had extreme confidence in the Boys Softball Team last year. It was a great season for the Boys Softball team, but the season came to an end with a record of eight wins and two losses. This was the first year that the Boys Softball team didn’t make playoffs. The team understands why they couldn’t make the playoffs, but will continue to look forward to the future seasons. When Coach O’Hara was asked if this season is going to be “The One” for the team, he answered, “It better be ‘The One’ because a lot of players that have been in the program for a while are graduating.” The player’s confidence levels are going through the roof knowing that this is their last year, and they want to go all the way. One of the players, Edwin Calvillo, Div. 403, said, “I like how the team is doing right now because we’ve been shutting out teams, and we’re going to take it all the way this year.” Even though the coaches and players have shown an enormous amount of confidence with the players that have been with them for four years, they will continue to have confidence in their teams every year. ![]() By Willie Clay Staff Writer The Greyhound Girls Volleyball team had a good season this year, as they finished with 8 wins and 5 losses. During pre-season, the Lady Greyhounds went through some tough training. Before every practice, they had to run and shuffle around the gym floor. One half of the team had to do push-ups while the other half did squats and sit-ups. The training brought the girls together as a team. Cheering each other on through drills really improved their sportsmanship between the team. Although the team advanced to the playoffs at Walter Payton High School, they had a heartbreaking loss in the first round to the Lady Grizzlies of Payton High School. Hubbard’s volleyball captain Guadalupe Santoyo, Div. 405, stated, “This season was more challenging, but we did better than last year. It’s been a pleasure to play with my teammates for the last time.” Coach Webster commented, “The girls had a good year. It was a few miscues to our game, but overall, we did well.” The Lady Greyhounds had a good year with Greyhound pride; they will do even better next season. |
