![]() By Kimberly Trujillo Staff Writer Hubbard’s Chess Team came victorious in their first match of the season. With Jerry as their coach, Jovany Rivas, Luis Rosaslanda, Jocelyn Martinez, David Hui, Jose Domicc, and Eduardo Mercado were motivated to win. Luis Rosaslanda, a senior, won the first match of the tournament. Jocelyn Martinez, a senior who happens to be the only girl competing in the tournament, won her match. “Practice makes better” and “Don’t be afraid to try,” are two of many phrases Coach Jerry uses to encourage the students to achieve the goal of winning. The team has been very determined, holding practices every Monday through Friday from 3:45 p.m. to 5 p.m. They have competed against schools such as Kelly High School, Marine Science and Math Academy, and soon Whitney Young High School. So far the chess team has had two tournaments won and one lost. Jerry encourages other students that may be interested in joining chess but is afraid that they feel like they don’t have what it takes or think it’s only for people who are “intelligent.” He says you don’t have to be in an honors class nor in an A.P. class to join, you just need to have a head for strategy.

Staff Writer Belly Dance is a club here at Hubbard High School which is an all-girls club dancing to the different cultural music. This year it had a little twist; it went from anyone being able to join to having tryouts for all incoming members. After establishing their group these girls got to work. Their performance this year will be held at the end of the year. The members from previous years help the new girls the best way they can with whatever they might need. The unique thing about these ladies is that they all treat each other with respect and all collaborate or offer their help. This year’s showcase is mostly dedicated to the graduating seniors. Many of the senior girls have been part of Belly Dance since their freshmen year. Clara Padilla, who has been in Belly Dance for three years says, “Belly Dance has helped me in so many ways, I was extremely shy and I had stage fright but it helped me step out of my comfort zone.” Clara also added that it took a lot of dedication and effort because from her experience she wasn’t a good dancer but at the end she accomplished it. Belly Dance truly brings people together and helps with different scenarios that only help these ladies for the better. By Romario Flores
Staff Writer Coming into this year, there weren’t high expectations because the pool at Hubbard High School wasn’t available due to renovations. Therefore the swim team wouldn’t have a pool to practice in. So far, the boys swim team has met with the following schools: Kennedy, Juarez, Little Village and Gage Park. They met with Kennedy on Tuesday, December 4th, 2012. They competed in many races like the 200 yard freestyle, 200 yard individual medley, 50 yard freestyle, 100 yard butterfly, 100 yard freestyle, 500 yard freestyle, 100 yard back stroke and the 100 yard breaststroke. According to the Hubbard swimming team’s head coach Robyn Wells, Gustavo Orozco is one of the best swimmers on the team. He won 1st place in the 100 yard butterfly race and in the 200 yard individual medley. He was the only Hubbard swimmer to win a race in the meet against Kennedy High School. Their record this season is 2 of 3. The coaches were also happy to announce that there will be a water polo team for both boys and girls. Further information on the water polo team has yet to be announced. |
