Staff Writer Hubbard’s Soccer J.V. Team won the City Championship on October 15, 2012. Winning first place against Kelly High School, the score was 3 to 1. Both teams gave all they had. They kept shooting at the goalie and nothing happened until the second half. At the second, Kelly scored the first goal and Hubbard was down by one. In the last ten minutes Hubbard scored the first goal made by Giovanni Perez. Then, Carlos Jimenez, with an injured arm, took a good shot at the goalie and scored the third goal, winning the First Place plate for Hubbard High School. As the team motto goes “Go hard or go home." By Clara Padilla Staff Writer Even though the Teachers CTU strike happened during the Cross Country season, Mr. Shunt, the coach for the Boys Cross Country Team, stated how his runners still managed to make amazing improvements and times. Did the CTU strike have any effect over the season? “It did, because the runners had to practice on their own without the coaches. Luckily that was our weekend off so we didn’t miss any meets." Do you coach both the boys and the girls’ team? “No, I only coach the guy’s team." Who do you think improved the most from beginning to end of the season? “Manuel Lule and Felix Vazquez both made surprising improvements. After being on the team for two years, Manuel Lule is the fastest runner.” Any seniors that might run cross country in college? “Four seniors that might potentially run at college level would be Luis Reyes, Felix Vazquez, Manuel Lule, and Ricardo Robles. I hope if they run in college; they can use that to benefit their academics.” How many meets are in a Cross Country season? “There are usually eight meets. They start from 6:30am to 12:30pm. ”What place did the team finish in this season? “This season, the boys varsity finished in seventh place, four points away from sixth place. This was the first time ever that our runners finished in under seventeen minutes.” Did Cross Country run outside of Chicago? “Cross Country traveled as far as Aurora for the Cadet Invite.” How many students are on the team? “About twenty runners.” When does the season start and end? “The season starts in summer running camp in June and they have their first meet at the end of August. The season ended October 13, 2012 with the city championship.”

Staff Writer Hubbard High School strives for the win against Bogan High School at Gately Stadium. It was a cloudy day at Gately Stadium. Bogan started strong by with the score of 0-6 by halftime. With Bogan leading, Hubbard needed motivation. After the halftime break, the Greyhounds stepped into the gridiron listening to the roars of their fellow classmates, wearing red and grey chanting “HUBBARD HUBBARD HUBBARD!” Senior wide receiver Santino Tomas scored Hubbard’s first touchdown, giving Hubbard their first lead of the game at 7-6. Senior running back Reggie Johnson scored the second touchdown giving Hubbard an even better lead of 14-6. Senior defensive tackle Hugo Valencia stated, “It was a good game in our part. They scored on their first play of the game and never passed the 50 yard line until the fourth quarter.” After a long, rainy game, Hubbard made a comeback and won. The final score was 14-6. Staff Writer The Girls Swim Team had started practice back in August and were supposed to have their first competition on September 10th, but was postponed because the CTU strike had started. Including championships meets, they have had a total of 12 meets and won 5. Their biggest competition, according to Coach Robyn, was George Washington High School. The Junior Varsity team won second place in the city. The Cavalier staff would like to congratulate the team on their great season! ![]() By Romario Flores Staff Writer This season, the Hubbard soccer team faced a lot of issues. They were eliminated from the Pepsi Showdown and missed 2 conference games because of the CTU strike. One of the conference games missed due to the CTU strike was vs. Kelly and the other vs. Little Village. They didn't get to make these two games up. Regardless, they still had a good starting 11 players and had a solid season. Another issue that hampered the season this year was that they were unable to compete in the State tournament because the school wasn't registered by the athletic coordinator. The soccer team wasn't the only team that was unable to attend the State tournaments, all of the Hubbard sports teams couldn't play. This was the first year in history that the Hubbard soccer team didn't go to the state tournament. Many of the seniors anticipated this season because it was going to be their last, and for most, it was the first time they were able to go to the Pepsi showdown to play for our school and represent the city of Chicago. In the end, they only got to play one game in the Pepsi showdown and they ended up getting eliminated because of the CTU strike. This season may have been cut short and it wasn't everything that the team hoped for, but they still had a lot of fun and made a lot of great memories that they will never forget. |
