![]() By Erik Rodriguez and Francisco Guzman Staff Writers This season was full of tragedies and disappointments for the Hubbard Boys Soccer team. It all began on a Friday afternoon –an intense game between Hubbard and Curie. It was a loss for Hubbard with the score being 5-2. That situation was made worse by the loss of head coach Franco Ocampo. It was hurtful for the team to see their coach leave his position. Technically, it was the end of the season for the varsity and junior varsity soccer teams, until luckily coach Ned and coach George were appointed as co-coaches for the varsity and JV teams. When asked, what was the biggest challenge faced this season? Coach George’s response was, “Coaching the varsity at the end of the season which is very tough to do because it’s too late to rectify mistakes or improve.” When asked who he thought stepped up this season, coach George responded, “From the freshman team, Juan Morales, Div.706. He made a big impression so much so that I moved him up with varsity, and he did wonderful in his first game. From varsity, I cannot say because I was not their coach all season, but junior Gerardo Gutierrez, Div. 508, always helps us in every game.” The switch was peculiar, but it raised the team’s spirit to continue the season positively. It wasn’t until Hubbard’s game against Mather High School where the team was hit with more bad news. Varsity captain, Erik Rodriguez, Div. 405, was kicked off the team due to academic reasons along with many key varsity players. They were all an important part of the team and their removal caused a great impact. The season unfortunately ended early for the soccer team with a 1-0 loss against Juarez in state playoffs. It was a close game with a late goal scored within the last 10 minutes. It was a tough season for the team, especially for the seniors since it was their last year. Through all of the tragedies and changes, the guys always stood together and they never stopped pushing each other to be better every day. They ended the season with a lot of heart and pride. Most importantly, they ended the season as a strong unit following with the pleasing announcement of head coach Ocampo’s return of coaching both Boys and Girls Soccer teams for many years to come.
