High school is very different from elementary school; you need to be prepared to being in a building with approximately 1,500 students. Hubbard’s hallways are always crowded. Why? Some students think it’s okay to linger at their lockers until the bell rings. People get to school late and decide to stall a bit more before going to class. Another reason why the hallways are so crowded is because of the constant need of communication. People love to stop and talk to their friends or teachers. Another frustrating issue are the crowded stairways. Students usually congregate in the middle stairways while stairways at the end of the hall are usually empty. If you want to avoid the traffic jam, go to the stairs at the end of the hall! If Hubbard had different schedules for freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors, the hallways wouldn’t be so crowded. Also if they had hall sweeps, students will get tired of after-school detention. Crowded hallway and stairways can sure be frustrating but planning ahead and not following the crowd can help you get to class on time.

By ShaKyla Grant Are there things you should know about starting high school as a freshman? Wondering how you’re going to get by? Several seniors took the time out of their day to share their experiences and give any helpful advice to the freshman. High school is what you make it. This is the time where memories are made, and when relationships are built or brought to an end. Deonte McReynolds, Div. 506 Q: Did you and should you take your freshman year seriously? Why? A: I actually did because I came into the IB Program and I knew it was difficult. Freshman year should be taken seriously because it will determine the rest of your four years. Q: Is freshman year as important as people say? A: Yes, it is because it can either put you ahead or have you falling behind. Q: Did you have any guidance, a role model? If so, were you glad to have that and if not, do you wish that you did? A: I did not have any guidance but I wish I did because I believe I would have done better. Q: What advice would you have wanted to know your freshman year? A: I would have wanted to know that coming into high school was not like elementary school. There is no one to hold your hand and take you through every step. Q: What should a student do about a problem with a teacher? A: The student should discuss the problem with the teacher in a respectful manner. That teacher can determine your grade. From: Ms. Alyson Lately, in my relationship, I’ve noticed that my boyfriend and I have rarely been communicating with one another; the only communication we have is via text. And I don’t see the point of being in a relationship if there is no physical contact. I also have noticed that he has a problem against the LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transsexual) community, he complains and makes fun of them. I find it to be very offensive in many ways and it irks me because I’m a supporter of the LGBT community. I still have feelings for him and I like him a lot, but I am simply not in “love” with him. I want out of this relationship and I am not sure how to tell him without doing it in a harsh way. Any help? He said: The feeling you have is very common. Many people do not like long distance relationships and the feeling that there’s a lack of communication. The problem you addressed about him having a problem with the LGBT community is a BIG no-no. The distance is also an issue because it can just pulls the both of you further and further apart. If you want to break up with him in a nice way, start off with saying, “I’ve been noticing...” and continue what you must say and then bring in the problems that have been bothering you. Be completely honest with him. He should understand and if not, don’t be afraid. She said: You cannot be in a healthy relationship if your boyfriend is against your views. You should talk to him and find out if that is really how he feels about gay people. If he was just playing around, let him know you don’t find that humorous at all. Many guys joke around like that and they do not realize how their jokes affect certain people. You never know, maybe you can work things out. Good luck! From: Mr. Worrisome In my home life, I have been facing a lot of problems that have also accumulated into my school life. I’m not sure on how to deal with the fact that this is affecting me, both physically and mentally. I try to refrain from thinking negatively, and I really don’t know if I have a choice. He said: What you must first do is take your time and think things through. You should try to separate home from school. If you see that you can’t finish homework at home, try to take time and finish it in school so it won’t add onto your stress. Also keep problems out of your head, and don’t over think items; it makes things more complicated. If you still feel as if you are not coping, try to speak to a school counselor, or a teacher you are close with. Talking about your feelings can help and put things into perspective and everything will be fine. She said: Being depressed and anxious affect everyone in different ways. Talk to someone about how you’re feeling. Sometimes it’s a good idea to have someone hear you out and be able to help. There is only so much a person can take, and you’re keeping your problems bottled up and sooner or later you’re going to have an emotional breakdown. Just remember that you are not alone; there are a lot of support groups you can go for help. By Maria Esquivel & Erik Rodriguez From: Shy Guy I want to ask this girl out... but I’m not sure she’s ever even noticed me... I have this big crush on her too... so... what should I do?
From Aching Heart Recently, my boyfriend and I have been having some problems. So... I did a little snooping, which I’ve never done before, and I found out that he’s cheating on me. Should I confront him and tell him I saw the messages or should I say someone told me? Please help...
Brenda Chavez (Div. 403) High school is just a ‘’school memory’’ that we all have. It’s where you become mature and start realizing how hard life is. One of my best memories was my freshman year because I met many new people and I joined the soc- cer team. The most difficult year for me was junior year because of the ACT, but if you study hard and work hard you will see good results! Now it’s my last year and I’m excited to be graduating from high school and go to college. I will miss all my friends and my teachers. It was a great experience and now it’s time to starts a new journey. I will miss Hubbard very much, but I will keep all the good memories in my heart. My advice for those underclassmen is to enjoy all your 4 years because it goes by fast. And good luck for those of you taking the ACT next year. Fatima Garcia (Div. 409) “Thrilling” is the best word that describes the feeling I received from Hubbard - it was an absolute thrilling ride. With all the ups and downs these past years, there were many lessons I have learned. I saw many people come and go throughout the years. My favorite part of these years was being able to interact with so many fantastic students and teachers. I enjoyed being a part of the debate team and the soccer team. I had valuable experiences from those activities overall, after these long four years, I have learned to become a better student, athlete, and friend; now I’m ready to deal with the real world I have many things planned for my future! My advice for those underclassmen is have fun, enjoy your 4 years, and go to all the events that they have at Hubbard because it only happens once in your life. By Erik Rodriguez Seniors! Have you kept up to date with what you’re supposed to do? If not, you better get back on track! There are many things that can’t keep you from graduating and the time to fix them is running. Make sure you are on track with credits, which you need a total of 24 to graduate .Since we are in second semester, it’s important to make sure you are passing all your required classes to get credit. If you are missing any, make sure you are taking night school or virtual school courses. If you’re not sure that you have all your credits, schedule an appointment with Ms. Sullivan, the senior counselor. Many seniors are held back from graduation each year for not meeting the 40 service hour requirement. If you are missing hours, go to the counseling office and ask for any available community service projects to accumulate your required hours. You can also keep your eyes open for any event coming up that can provide you with hours. Money is always a problem. Seniors, make sure you have cleared all of your debts. This includes temporary IDs, rentals, lost books, activity fees, lab fees, and graduation fees. You will not be able to graduate school if you owe money. Going to college is a must, so make sure you send out all your applications. Also, be sure to apply for FAFSA and scholarships to obtain free money to pay for your classes and books. Student loan are inevidable, but try to avoid borrowing more than you need. Too much debt will get you in a whole lot of trouble. Don’t be shy and talk to Ms. Sullivan; she is here to help. If you have any questions or concerns, you have to have a voice and approach someone that can help you. It is your responsibility to do what needs to be done. Noone wants to stay behind, so meet your deadlines and get ready to leave high school! By Erik Ayala The Academy Awards took place on March 2, 2014 at the Dolby Theater in Hollywood, California. The red carpet was just as exciting as the show itself. Nominees and guests filled the carpet with there best looks. Pharell stirred things up with wearing tuxedo shorts. Sandra Bullock stole the crowd with her midnight blue gown; she was voted best-dressed woman. Bradley Cooper was voted best dress Ellen DeGeneres hosted the event. Ellen kept the night alive, and made the audience feel comfortable. She ordered pizza and passed it around to the crowd. The pizza delivery man had a good night by not only passing out pizza to Hollywood royalty, but also receiving a $1,000 tip from the host herself. Ellen also broke a record while hosting the show. Her selfie received over 1 million retweets on Twitter in one hour beating President Barack Obama’s previous record with 77,000. The night had many surprises. Matthew McConaughey won “Best Actor” for his role in the movie 'Dallas Buyers Club'. Cate Blanchett won best actress for her role in the movie 'Blue Jasmine'. 'Frozen' took home the award for “Best-Animated Feature” and “Best Original Song”. 12 Years Of Slave took home “Best Picture,” beating 'Gravity', 'American Hustle', 'Captain Phillips', 'Dallas Buyers Club' and 'Her'. Gravity took a big win itself for “Best Director” by Alfonso Cuarón. Many thought the night was a success and it will be remembered for years to come. By Frida Morales Staff Writer In the beginning of the school year, Hubbard had the daily announcements at the end of the day, while last year the announcements were made during division in the morning. There have been many complaints about the announcements. Many students state that they should make announcements in the morning because students don’t listen to them anymore or don’t pay attention to them because all they’re thinking at the end of the day is going home. Some actually enjoy listening to them at the end of the day. This caused controversy throughout the school because students want to be aware of sports, clubs, programs, etc. I think it’s important to inform students about what is happening in the school and direct them where they need to go if they need any help. I interviewed two seniors regarding their opinions on announcements. Paola Ascencio, Div. 404, said, “I think they should announce them with more amusement since now they decided to announce them in the morning. They should say a motivated quote after they are done announcing them. I prefer hearing the announcements in the morning because some students, like myself, who are in a working program don’t get to hear them if they are announced at end of the day.” Joel Contreras, Div. 411, said, “My opinion on the announcements is that I like them. I like how they assign Mr. Lyles to make the announcements; I like it when he says ‘Cha cha cha.’ They give good announcements, and I prefer them at the end of the day, so I won’t forget them.” With the start of a new year, they decided to do the announcements in the morning and at the end of the day. It seems that Hubbard has now fixed this controversy about the announcements and everyone is satisfied. By Jacqueline De La Barrera Staff Writer A two year college or a four year college? There are many differences between the two. Four year colleges are usually talked about more, but most people end up going to a two year college, and then transferring to a four year. Benefits of going to a two year college include: saving money, a chance to raise your GPA, and increasing your chances of getting accepted into a four year university of your choice. Institutions are usually bigger, and offer student housing. They also have more scholarship opportunities for incoming freshmen. Choosing between the two may not be easy; make sure you choose one that is best suited for you. Two year colleges aren’t as boring as people think. Sometimes, you’re limited to new experiences and people as most of the people from your graduating class end up going to the same school. In many cases, people enjoy being with familiar faces because they feel a bit comfortable and aren’t as scared to step into this new stage of their lives. Many people end up going to a community college due to financial troubles. Community college is much cheaper and gives you a chance to gain a better education without all the debt. The average cost of a public college is $13,600 which is much cheaper compared to the average cost of a four year university. Choosing your classes for community college can be very stressful. Most require you to go down to the school and wait in line to fi ll out your schedule. Waiting in line may be annoying, but just think of all the money you’ll be saving! Graduating from a community college earns you your associate’s degree. Remember, you can always transfer to a four year university to earn a higher degree. Universities has always been more attractive to undergraduates. There’s the sororities and fraternities, the parties, and the feeling of independence. Most colleges let you choose your classes online in the coziness of your own home. Of course, four year college they have cons. Four year colleges are usually more expensive, thus drowning you in debt. The average cost of a private university is $36,300. For students, money for college will be an issue whether they receive scholarships based on academics and extracurricular activities. Some of the teachers here at Hubbard say they are still paying off their college debts! Many say you can’t put a price on knowledge, but some may beg to differ. Graduating from a four year will earn you a bachelor’s degree, but this can also be gained if all credits are transferred from a two year college. Whichever college you choose to attend to, make sure you commit to it. Going to college is serious; you can lose a lot of money if you aren’t aware of what you’re doing and may not even earn a degree. It’s one of the most important things you can have in life. It may not be free, but it’s extremely useful. The average salary of a four year college graduate is $55,700 while the average high school graduates will earn $33,800. A degree from either college will help you when looking for a job, and remember, the higher the degree, the better the job. Just because college isn’t a game, it doesn't mean it can’t be fun. Whichever college you choose to attend, make sure you enjoy every second of it, and gain not only educational, but also life experience. By Erik Rodriguez For the past few weeks, students have been called down to the auditorium for assemblies before lunch. These assemblies can last anywhere from ten to fifteen minutes. Students are brought down to be lectured for coming tardy to school and being tardy to class. These assemblies wouldn’t exist if Hubbard’s students were more punctual. I think we should all be responsible enough to go to class on time so that we wouldn’t have to sit down on those uncomfortable auditorium seats. I think we can all agree that these assemblies are avoidable. I for one get really hungry after sitting in classes while thinking about the best part of the day: lunch. I don’t know about you guys, but I just want to eat. So let’s just do what we’re supposed to do so we won’t have to go through these annoying assemblies day after day. Until we start getting here on time, these assemblies will just keep on going. Be responsible! |
