Have you ever wondered if any of your teachers would have chosen a different career path? As a senior, trying to figure out what I’ll do in the future hasn’t been one of the easiest choices. I’m hoping that becoming a teacher will never cross my mind. I’ve come across many teachers that have said they used to say the same thing, and look at where they are now! Mr. Flavin planned on becoming a physical therapist but ended up substituting for a teacher here at Hubbard that went on a maternity leave. The teacher never came back and he was hired. When asked what advice he’d give his younger self, he enthusiastically said, “Don’t become a teacher.” Mr.Shunt said he was interested in pursuing a career in graphic design which I think is interesting and would’ve possibly been a career choice I’d make due to the fact that we’ll be graduating soon and the choices we make from now on will determine where we’ll end up in a few years. When asked what were some jobs he previously had, he said, “Taco Bell, McDonald’s, CDW, and MCL Software Services in California for 2 years making websites for several companies, including 2 international ones which were FujiFilm France and Microsoft Europe.” He also said, “Start investing as soon as you have your first paycheck”. I noticed that once they started teaching, they liked it. It is a pretty nice environment to be in. Both teachers mentioned that the best part of working at Hubbard are the students! ![]() By Meliza Angiano So what’s up with the schedule changing every year? I thought that Hubbard High School would finally finalize their schedule, but that thought changed towards the end of this school year. Wondering why it’s always changing, I interviewed Mr. Newman to find out why a change every year. He said that the administration presents the teachers with two schedules that they must vote on. Not only that, but he also gave us the reason to why it was changed previous years. “Two years ago division was at the beginning of the school day, every day, and students were not going to that class. That needed to change. The next year division was eliminated completely and many of the activities that we used to hold during division were also lost.” “The format of the school is not changing for next year. We will still have Wednesday division days and 50 minute classes on the other days.” “The only thing that might happen is that we would need to add 0 period or 9th period options for classes because we project our enrollment to increase and we do not have the space to have all of the students in classes at the same time without adding the potential for extra periods.” We don’t have it as difficult as other schools, such as Curie and Kennedy who start their 1st period at 7:30 in the morning (according to Mr. Newman) when there are students who participate in extracurricular activities or work and need to get to their jobs at a reasonable time. Knowing these thoughts of Mr. Newman I couldn’t stop myself from asking him what would his ideal schedule look like and he said. “I envision a school that is only 4 days a week with longer class periods.” Mr. Newman added, “That's right long weekends every week, but school would also go to about 5:00 every day. I would like to see school all year round. I believe we should start school earlier in August and have 1 week breaks throughout the school year instead of our current schedule where we start extremely late and don't get out until almost July. I believe in change as long as it has a purpose.” By Jose Hernandez
The truth about most schools is that students don’t really appreciate the hard working staff at their school. The hard working school’s staff, other than the teachers, should be appreciated for the tireless work they do. I am speaking for the lunch staff who cook and serve us our breakfast and lunch as well as the janitors that clean our school. They deserve the same respect as the teachers. Teachers get an appreciation day and it’s not fair that the rest of the staff does not. They should be more appreciated because without them, Hubbard students wouldn’t attend a good school. These staff members are as important as anyone else on the faculty. Imagine doing all their work and not getting a single thank you. Doesn’t seem so acceptable, right? The janitors and the lunch servers at school should be acknowledged at least once in a while for their hard work. Here at Hubbard we have a great lunch staff; the women and men work hard to give the students a great, healthy lunch. They all do their best to make sure no one is left without a meal. It wouldn’t hurt to tell them, “Thank you! I appreciate everything you’ve done for us.” By Marilu Gonzalez
The end of the school year is approaching. Everyone is excited about graduating and having a nice summer vacation. However, some students are struggling with serious debt. Karina Rodriguez (Div. 506) explains how she feels about it. “With all the excitement about prom and graduation, I forgot that I still owed $200 to the school.” Since she has a job, she says she doesn’t have a problem paying it off. Other students, however, are seriously struggling. Jorge Cifuentes (Div. 512) has paid off some of his debt, yet still owes $728! This debt has been growing since freshman year. “My debt is mostly my activity fees and temps,” he says. Jorge explained how he plans to pay it off. “Every check I get from my job will directly go towards my debt.” There’s a variation of debts from only $100 to $500 to $850! Every student with a debt plans to pay it off as soon as possible to enjoy their prom and graduation. Good luck to all the seniors with their serious debt! From Sherry: “What could you give your boyfriend for his birthday?”
She said: I don’t think it’s necessary to buy him something expensive. Just buy him something simple. You can just spend time with him and give him a surprise. The most important thing is spending time with them and just having fun. He knows that you care for him and that he has you and that’s the best gift he could receive. It doesn’t matter what you buy or what you get him; what matters is the memories that you create. From Sherry: “What is a good gift to buy my boyfriend for his birthday?” He said: It’s not as hard to buy a guy a gift as everyone thinks. You could easily buy him a piece of clothing from a brand that he favors (Nike, Hollister, Adidas, etc). There is always the option of taking him out to a popular restaurant. My favorites are Buffalo Wild Wings and Hooters. Romantically, you could cook him a nice home cooked dinner. Don’t try to cook if you know that you aren’t good at it though. You’re trying to make him happy, not lose him. Cook something that you know that you’re good at and something that he’ll like. Trying to make something for the first time might be setting you up for failure. Honestly guys don’t really care about how expensive the gift is that you buy him. The appreciation comes from the value of the effort that you put into making that smile sneak on our faces. We just want to be reassured that we are prized. From Pancho: “Is there a way to break up with your girlfriend without hurting her feelings?” She Said: I think you should just be straight up and tell her that things have changed. Don’t hurt her with a lie; tell her the truth. Creating a lie will only hurt her more and sooner or later the truth will come out. If you explain to her she will probably understand. Look at it on the bright side, maybe you guys can be friends after the break up. Either way there isn’t a proper form to break up with a girl without hurting her feelings. From Pancho: “Is there a way to break up with your girlfriend without hurting her feelings?” He Said: The only way to break up with a girl and not hurt her feelings is to pay her a million dollars to not cry. If you’re in Hubbard, then I’m pretty sure you can’t afford to do that. Truth is, there is no real way to break up with a girl who actually CARES about you without causing pain in her heart. Just try to let her down as easy as possible. The most disrespectful way to break up with a girl is through a text message or to send someone else to tell her your business. That’s like asking “Hey! How can I get you to hate me?” Don’t be a coward. You just have to man up and do what you have to do. ![]() By Maria Gonzalez THE BELL HAS RUNG! Four minutes! The hallways are overcrowded. With more and more students entering each year, there is more shoving, pushing, and pulling in the hallways to be on time. The passing time has changed again this year and a minute has been reduced. No more conversations with your friends and less time going to your lockers. Students are now under pressure of being swept with a minute less to get to class than last year. Nancy Alvarez, Div. 506, took the time to share her experience with the new bell schedule. Nancy said, “I felt pressure because of the new hall sweeps. Also, I have to go quicker to my locker and have less time to have conversations with friends.” She also said, “It should be removed because it would reduce the pressure on students to be on time. Hall sweeps also take up to fifteen minutes of our class, especially during first period. I think the school cut out the one minute to teach students to be on time more often.” The advice she wants to give is students shouldn’t take those four minutes for granted although it feels like we only have two minutes to be on time to class. They should consider that time is no joke and being tardy can badly hurt their attendance and grades. By Angel Segura
The schools detention policy has to be the most painful concept ever. They do so much to have these students serve detention for cuts and tardies. However, this whole idea works if you actually think about it. Once a student has not shown up to any detentions during the regular school day or if a student has too many cuts, Mr. Crotty has to give the student a Saturday detention. Mr. Crotty said, “The main cause of Saturday detentions has to be tardies or missed morning detentions. Saturday detention has helped to decrease the out of school and in school suspension rate considerably. Nobody wants to come to school on a Saturday.” They give the option to bring your own work or they can give you work to do there. Not showing up makes things even worse; they give students in-school or out of school suspension. Wendy Hidalgo, Div. 512, said, “Honestly, I do not think cutting or being late was worth it because I had to wake up at 7:30 on a Saturday morning just so I can be at the school at 8! You basically just sit in a chair until 11 am when they release you. It’s the most exhausting and boring 3 hours of your life! It’s literally the only time in your life when a chair is your worst enemy!” Even if Saturday detention is the worst of them all, just looking at how many students never want to serve detention on a Saturday morning proves that the whole detention process works. ![]() By Nury Gollaz & Passion Ware Tired of eating the same food all of the time? Are you in the mood to try something new? Bernie’s Restaurant is a Mexican-Italian restaurant that just opened 6 months ago on 6643 Cicero Avenue, right next to Dunkin Donuts. Although the restaurant is a bit small, the ambiance is something to look forward to because the decorations and the way the restaurant was set up is welcoming. We were greeted and seated at a table of our choice. Rather than starting off with the traditional tortilla chips, they give you thinly-sliced potato chips as an appetizer. We ordered the Chicken Alfredo and the Rudy Buffalo Chicken sandwich. When we were given our food, the plates looked extremely welcoming. The pasta was deliciously made. Although it was a bit creamy for my taste, the chicken was well incorporated with the dish. On the other hand, I completely fell in love with the Rudy sandwich. It had a perfect balance of spice to it, making you want to go in for seconds. Our service there was well taken care of. Before we finished our drinks, we were asked if we wanted another refill and if we needed anything. We ordered some fruit yogurts to go and our bill came out to be $16.34! That is just unbelievable. Usually, you'll get single pasta for that price! We definitely recommend this restaurant to everyone because they treated us with respect and kindness and made our experience more comfortable. Bernie's is open Monday-Saturday from 8am-8pm and is closed on Sundays. Besides the enjoyable food, Bernie's also provides catering. When the occasion calls for it, they will be more than happy to cater and decorate for your planned events. Furthermore, they deliver and provide discounts to the seniors of Autumn Green. Our experience was pleasant and it was good to know Bernie's has friendly staff and know what is good for our community.
