Angel Arellano Staff Writer The number of Hubbard students coming to school tardy has become a viral problem leading to stricter consequences for late students. The attendance and tardy policy, which have been enforced by the attendance staff, mandates for every morning tardy an after school or morning detention. Starting Friday, October 18, students that come in after 8:15 are served lunch time detentions. Students are given a bag lunch and serve detention in a designated room. After school and morning detentions are now given to students who have excessive tardies and cuts.If students choose not to serve detentions, they will be given an in-school suspension. Why are students forced to serve morning or after school detention for being late? During the week of October 14, 180 students were tardy. As a school, we are on a point system by CPS. If we fail to meet this point system, we will feel the negative effects as a whole. The poor attendance of students may affect Hubbard’s ratings, thus giving way to the enforcement of this policy. “This policy is expected to continue until attendance and tardies at Hubbard start to show improvement,” said Mr. Crotty. “All students must be ready with a plan for the sake of themselves to avoid falling prey to the new policy and so they can be on time,” he continued. Mr. Crotty said that other interventions have been made besides detentions. Robo-calls have been sent out for the last two weeks informing parents that students have to be in school by 8:05. Parents have been called in for conferences for students that have been chronically tardy. Building a good foundation within your high school career will help you to build good habits of being on time, become responsible for your actions, and understand that with tardiness comes a consequence

I think that the new tardy policy is a pretty good idea because it makes the students more responsible. Student don't care what time they get here, but now they have to be inside the building at an exact time. This is a good new rule that the administration is doing.

I have only got late to school one day, and served detention. Last year we had no policy for tardiness. Sometimes we wake up late and now students won't come to school if there late because they have to serve detention. I think this policy is making more students attendance drop.

I believe making detentions for late in morning, will not help anything. If anything i thingk it will make the students strike, becuase all the new rules are being thrown at us at once in an overwhelming manner. If they would take their time with giving us more rule i beleive the student will adjust better and would not be so defiante of the rules.

Well I believe that some students at Hubbard that come late everyday may have prolems on getting a ride or sleeping problem. Then again if they do have younger siblings and their parents drop them off they might have to go drop them of first and with the traffic they get here late.

I believe this rule is unfair also because our lines are way too long. I would be standing in line for 5 minutes and then the bell rings and i end up getting detention which is kind of bogus. I was on time but the line prevented me from not getting detention

I believe the majority of us students have a hard time getting on time because of the use of transportation.

I feel that this new system that is supposed to help our attendance and tardy is not going to help. For one thing students who are tardy are not going to want to serve a dentention during, before or after school and they will decide to not come in at all which will not help our attendance. Alough something does have to be done about the tardies this will not be helpful at all.

I personally feel like this was a dumb rule the school made. This is still not going to change the problem with tardiness. It might have a little improvement but tardiness will always be a problem n it will never go away. Honestly to me its pointless. I understand they're trying to prepare us for a job but there's a difference between being early to a job and to school. In a job you get paid so that motivates people to be on time.

The buses or trains sometime late, so we are late for school too. Student should go to take the bus early.

I believe this new rule has no positive affect. When students know they will receive detention for coming in late , they would rather not even attend school. Also the main reason of tardiness in my opinion is the line to enter Hubbard ; as a student I have experience to this.

In my own opinion i think that this rule isnt fair to many students. A lot of people have trouble getting to school. Like if they take the bus or walk. They should deal with lateness in a different way then just giving people detentions. People are alwyas going to be late no matter what. They should just give a warning
