Cast: Vin Diesel, Elijah Wood, Rose Leslie, Michael Caine, Director: Breck Eisner PG-13 - 106 mins. Synopsis: Vin Diesel stars as a valiant witch hunter named Kaulder, who was cursed with immortality after slaying a powerful witch queen, forcing him to watch his loved ones die of old age. Centuries later, the witch is resurrected from the dead and threatens the human race. Kaulder, the last witch hunter in the world, is the only one who has the power to defeat her. The Last Witch Hunter is a fantasy film that was very imaginative. The movie has a very dark and dirty look. The witch almost looks like a mythological figure like Medusa. I didn't enjoy this film because it lacked action. There is too much exposition and the rest of the movie involves Kauler searching for the witch. Although it was a great story that had interesting visuals, the film needed better actors who can play the part well. The movie was also too predictable. You knew what was going to happen, even in the end. In a good action movie, you don't know what'll happen next and it leaves you with that extra thrill. The movie needed more action scenes to depict when Kauler slayed the witch queen. The acting was disappointing because Vin Diesel is an actor that is used to starring in sci-fi and action films such as The Chronicles of Riddick and Fast and the Furious. It seemed like Vin Diesel was trying too hard to be charismatic that he forgot about to stay in character. Even though the role didn't fit him, the hair and makeup was great. The way Vin Diesel looked as Kaulder made him almost unrecognizable. He looks like an actual warrior off to fight witches. While the film had a great story, the main protagonist didn't put much effort and characterization into it. I do not recommend this film because of the predictable plot, lack of action, and poor acting. I give this film 2 out of 5 paws. Jessica Ortega, Arts & Entertainment Editor

I went to the restaurant with 3 friends for lunch and were promptly seated by our server. We received small, warm bread rolls while we decided what to order. We ordered two plates of pulled pork dinner, two plates of chicken tenders, and one plate of chicken enchiladas. The enchiladas were made with thick melted cheese and topped with warm, red mole. Serving portions were large, and we took the leftovers home. Once we finished our food, our kind waitress gave us the check and for our 5 plates coming out to almost $70, but it was all worth it. On a scale of 1-5 paws, we all agreed to give it 5 paws for their great service and delicious food. Chuck’s Southern Comforts Cafe is located in 6501 W. 79th St. Burbank and 8025 S. Cass Ave, Darien. |
