January 23, 2016 Is it possible to follow Hubbard’s uniform policy and still be stylish? You may think it’s impossible because of the colors limited by the dress code. Yet seniors Clarissa Cruz (Div.611) and Jesus Gallo (Div.605) think otherwise. They infuse style into the dress code and make it look easy. Jesus and Clarissa shop at H&M for affordable yet trendy clothes. Clarissa is interested in fashion trends because they allow individuals to be different; she enjoys creating outfits that stand out. Clarissa is inspired by Rihanna’s unique and bold fashion sense. For the winter season, Clarissa opts for long sleeve knit tops and pairs them with black distressed jeans. To add an extra kick of style, she accents it with black leather ankle boots. Her favorite accessories are earrings. She believes people express their personalities through fashion. Clarissa’s tip for new looks: “Don’t be scared of trying new things; always own your look.” On the other hand, Jesus looks to Mariano Di Vaio, an Italian model and actor, for his style inspiration. He enjoys adding his own spin to the styles and trends he discovers. Jesus believes fashion is one of the many ways people get to express themselves. For this season, his go-to outfit is a knit sweater with a mock neck, black pants, and some light brown mid-top boots. “They are comfortable, warm, and look good with almost anything.” he said. His favorite accessory would definitely be a watch. Jesus advises students to “have fun with what you wear and don’t worry about what others think. If you like it, wear it.” This dynamic duo proved that it is possible to add your own style to the dress code and look great. Next time you’re getting ready for school in the morning, try something new and you might love it.

January 21, 2016 We have heard of many different clubs and teams at Hubbard High School. This is an unusual group made by students, for students. Although the creator of the Hubbard clan remains unknown, they’ve decided to name themselves Tru Greyhounds. This Clash of Clans group was first created around the beginning of 2014 and throughout the 2 years it has became a 45 member clan. With a total of 100 wars won, and a win streak of 11 wars. “I’ve been in the clan since it first started, so I guess you can say that I was one of the first people to join Tru Greyhounds when it was created,” said Alex Gomez (Div.706), former member of Tru Greyhounds. Created by Supercell, Clash of Clans is an online mobile game released on August 2, 2012, for Android and Apple devices. This game is all about strategic advantages and working well with your team (or clan). You have the choice of creating your own clan or joining one. When you first start to play the game, you start with a little village as a town hall 1. As you progress through the game you become stronger and gain better troops for attacking. “When I first started I was weak, but then I joined Tru Greyhounds and it made me stronger and it also got me to a Town Hall 9,” said Nestor Quevedo (Div.703), former member of Tru Greyhounds. If you’re a Clash of Clans player, search for their clan to see if they think you are ready to be part of the True Greyhound clan. This clan is not only a team of the Hubbard students but also alumni from Hubbard High School. This shows off our strong school loyalty as well as our ability to relate and work well with each other to conquer a strategic game. Go Tru Greyhounds! Isabel Garcia, A&E Editor
January 11, 2016 Dollop Coffee, located at 343 S. Dearborn St., is a small coffee shop offering a great selection of coffee, drinks, sandwiches, pies, and pastries. Its cozy atmosphere is combined with bookshelves, containing books from all sorts of genres. Drink some hot coffee, sit on a comfortable couch and use their free WiFi. Who doesn’t like free wifi? They also have very soft music playing in the background so you can still have conversations. This particular spot has a hipster vibe to it; the people are very calm and mind their own business. The place feels open and filled with natural light. The friendly employees greet you with a smile on their face. This coffee shop is located near the University Village. This is great for those long days at school; you can walk to this shop, sit down and relax, work on assignments, or just hangout with your friends. When we arrived, everyone was attended to right away. My sister ordered a medium caramel latte and I ordered a medium cappuccino. They made our coffee as soon as we had ordered it. The price was reasonable at $3.00 for the caramel latte and $2.65 for the cappuccino. We ordered it to stay, so they gave it to us in nice, white mugs. The cup was warm and the coffee wasn’t too hot. The white foam was a light white created with a cream colored swirl: a design created on top of every coffee. The design does not dissipate until you are ready to drink. I recommend this to people who are not into sweet drinks. After you are done with your coffee, you just pick it up and take it to a small window that leads to their kitchen. The food was great as well, especially the homemade biscuits for $2.50. If you’re vegan, not to worry, they sell delicious vegan donuts for $2.50. For the early risers, they have breakfast available for a limited time that offer the day’s special pie and sausage biscuits. The shop doesn’t have many seats, so if you get there during rush hour, you may have trouble finding a seat. Dollop Coffee is open from 6:30am-7pm on weekdays and 8am-7pm on weekends. For future college students in the area, go get a different perspective on coffee rather than the usual Starbucks! Highly recommended! Here’s a special tip: there are more than what you see on the menu once you enter. Ask for the full menu at the cashier which contain more drinks and food. |
